For just over two months, teachers and educators in the public school system in Alagoas have been prohibited from expressing opinions on various topics in the classroom. This is because the state's Legislative Assembly enacted law No. 7,800 , known as Free School or School Without a Party, which defends political, ideological and religious neutrality.
Immediately, the Ministry of Education (MEC) forwarded to the Attorney General's Office (AGU) arguments that justified a direct action of unconstitutionality, such as restricting teaching practice, restricting the role of the teacher, censoring content and materials and prohibiting free debate in the school environment.
However, despite the body having positioned itself against Special Data the measure, similar processes continue to be debated in the Chamber of Deputies and in states such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás and Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to the Federal District. One of them is Bill No. 193, of 2016 , which is being processed in the Federal Senate and led to the opening of a public consultation on the Program.
As of 10:30 am this Wednesday, July 20, 108,364 people had already expressed their support for the measure. This part of society has been arguing that political and ideological indoctrination in the classroom offends the student's freedom of conscience, violates the principle of political and ideological neutrality of the State and threatens the democratic regime itself.
Furthermore, those in favor argue that the lack of regulation in the education system goes beyond the ethical and legal limits of the freedom to teach and often exposes content that may be in conflict with the moral convictions of students and their parents. Impartiality and the defense of neutral education are also highlighted to defend the Program.
Contras
Those against totaled 131,420 votes as of 11:30 am. For them, the Program represents censorship of ideas, a setback to democracy and a risk to freedom of thought, expression and diversity. The proposal, dubbed by many as the “Gag Law”, is also seen by the group as a measure to silence and persecute teachers and harm the teaching-learning process.
Those who are against Escola Sem Partido also reinforce that the measure ends up defending a partisanization of the school, different from its slogan, as it only mentions content considered left-wing. Furthermore, it compromises the plurality of ideas, the expansion of debate and the guidance and formation of critical thinking, and makes it difficult to resolve conflicts that may occur in the classroom, such as those linked to gender and religion. _________________ Special Data |
